Date: September 14th 2018

Dear Colleagues (and Friends),
here are a reminder and some fresh news regarding our forthcoming JK2018 meeting!

Reminder:
● the period for "early bird" registration (50€ only) ends in two weeks time [after Sept. 30th, the regular registration fee will be 125€]
http://paleopolis.rediris.es/cg/registration.html
● the abstract submittal will be closed in six weeks time [after Oct. 31st, we shall not have time to review, language-edit, and print any late abstract]
https://php5.univ-brest.fr/conference/ocs/index.php/JK2018/JK2018
● the meeting starts on Dec. 5th (it is a Wednesday)
● the manuscript submittals for the VIRTUAL Special Issue of Cretaceous Research will be closed by October 2019 (!)

Accomodation (suggestions): Obviously, there are great hotels in Genève (CH), but they could be expensive. In contrast, there are cheap hotels (or, for instance, AirBnB opportunities) in nearby Annemasse and Gaillard (FR). The French border is very close to the Muséum d'Histoire naturelle de Genève (CH), a few minutes only by tram or by bus.

There will be at least 3 guest speakers to give keynote talks:
● Raymond Enay / Why not return to the original definition of the Tithonian according to Oppel and abandon the Jurassic-Cretaceous limit imposed by W. Kilian? (The original Tithonian design (Oppel, 1865) makes the Berriasian the latest stage of the upper Jurassic)
● Andreas Strasser / The Jurassic Cretaceous boundary interval in the Jura Mountains and the Vocontian Basin Sedimentological aspects
● Helmut Weissert / Late Jurassic-early Cretaceous oceanography

The VIRTUAL Special Issue of Cretaceous Research will be entitled 'The transition of the Jurassic to the Cretaceous: an early XXIth century holistic approach'. When submitting your manuscript into EVISE you will be requested to select the option "VSI:Jurassic-Cretaceous Transition". We have already listed more than 10 manuscript proposals as, for instance:
● Bruno Granier / Dual biozonation scheme (benthic foraminifera and "calcareous" green algae) over the Jurassic - Cretaceous transition. Another plea to revert the system boundary to its historical Orbigny's and Oppel's definition. Already "IN PRESS" at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cretres.2018.08.024
● Peter Baumgartner, Luis O'Dogherty, Atsushi Matsuoka, Špela Goričan / Correlation of silica-rich pelagic lithofacies around the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary from the Atlantic across the Alps and Himalayas to the western Pacific
● Christian Salazar, Wolfgang Stinnesbeck / Bio- and sequence stratigraphy of the Jurassic - Cretaceous transition in central Chile
● Ismail Omer Yilmaz / A review for the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary successions in Turkey - Depositional conditions and biotic changes
● Mohamed Benzaggagh / Discussion on the calpionellid biozones and proposal of a homogeneous calpionellid scheme for the Tethyan Realm
● ...

As you can already understand from the titles of the keynotes and the forthcoming papers, there are various opinions and options regarding the Jurassic-Cretaceous system boundary. Our meeting with a dedicated session will offer everybody an unique opportunity to share views with others and contribute to a fair and open debate (hopefully all opinions/options should be represented because we welcome all colleagues who want to share their views and contribute to address this issue, which is an outstanding issue since at least 1973-1975).

We look forward to meet you next December in Genève!
Best wishes,
Bruno Granier
